Course Description:

This course is recommended for teachers and school auxiliary staff. You will learn how to deal with a comprehensive range of first aid procedures.  The course covers emergency situations common in the school environment and is therefore ideal for teachers and other school support staff.  It is not a substitute for HSE recommended Emergency First Aid at Work or First Aid at Work training.

Pre-requisites: Candidates must be physically able to carry out the procedures detailed in the course outline.

  • The role of the first aider
  • Managing an emergency
  • Communication and casualty care
  • Primary & Secondary Survey
  • Managing an unconscious casualty
  • Resuscitation (all ages)
  • Choking (all ages)
  • Asthma
  • Severe allergic reaction
  • Control of bleeding
  • Bone, muscle & joint injuries
  • Head injuries
  • Burns & scalds
  • Poisoning

Delivery & Assessment:

This course includes a mixture of theoretical study and practical skills development. Accreditation is through continual assessment by the instructor along with a final practical and theory test. Certificates are valid for 3 years after which a refresher course is necessary. It is strongly advised that candidates refresh their skills after 12 months.

This course does not replace the HSE recommended EFAW & FAW courses for appointed persons.
