This course was formerly the ‘First Aid for Child Carers’ course. It is designed for people caring professionally for infants and children in any setting and is suitable for au pairs, nannies, childminders*, nursery/pre-school/school workers, creche leaders, sport & leisure staff, parents and anyone responsible for the welfare of children. It is recognised by HSE and includes requirements for appointed persons in the workplace. The Paediatric course also includes some coverage of adult first aid to enable you to assist adult colleagues should you need to in an emergency.
* Child carers MUST hold a valid Paediatric First Aid certificate
Babysitters are currently not regulated and have no legal requirement to have a first aid qualification, however it is vital that everyone caring for children knows what to do in an emergency. Click here to find out about our First Aid for Baby & Child courses.
No prior first aid knowledge required. Candidates must be physically able to carry out all of the procedures detailed in the course outline.
Content of the Paediatric First Aid course is delivered through a mixture of theoretical study and (mostly) practical skills development. Our instructors are all qualified teachers with vast experience of adult and child first aid. Assessment is continual and carried out by the instructor through observation, questioning, scenario practice and a final written paper & practical task. On successful completion of the course candidates will receive a Paediatric First Aid certificate recognised by HSE. This is valid for 3 years, after which a refresher courses is needed. It is also recommended that Paediatric First Aiders complete an annual skills refresher course to avoid ‘skill fade’.
