• Learners must have sufficient literacy skills to access the reference manual and additional learning materials.
• Course delivery and learning materials are provided in English.
• For any online sessions you will need to use a computer with a reasonable internet connection, working camera and microphone.

Description

This course provides you with the knowledge and skills to recognise a range of mental health conditions, start a supportive conversation and signpost someone to appropriate professional help.  It is a standalone course and you do not need to complete Level 4 in order to do Level 5.

Course Syllabus

• What mental health is, why people develop mental health conditions 
• The role of a First Aider for Mental Health
• How to provide advice and practical support for a person presenting a mental health condition
• How to recognise and manage stress
• How to recognise a range of mental health conditions:

- Depression

- Anxiety

- Psychosis

- Eating Disorders

- Suicide

- Self-harm

• The impact of drugs and alcohol on mental health
• The first aid action plan for mental health
• Promoting a positive mental health culture in the workplace 

Suitability

This course is for anyone aged 14+ wishing to increase their understanding of a range of mental health conditions and know how to support someone experiencing a mental health crisis.  They will be able to utilise the skills and knowledge gained to act as a first aider for mental health within the workplace and beyond.  Learners who complete this course may choose to go on and complete the Level 6 qualification. 

Delivery & Assessment 

The minimum delivery time for this qualification is 7 guided learning hours.  You must attend all teaching hours and complete all assessments to pass the course.   Practical topics must be taught and assessed in the classroom.

This course is delivered using direct teaching methods, group discussion and scenario-based activities.  

Assessment includes a written question paper with a mixture of multiple-choice questions and open questions with short answers. There is also a practical role-play scenario which is completed in small groups.   NB - For online courses the written assessment is completed verbally via a 1-1 professional discussion with the tutor using video conferencing.

 

There is no grading of the assessment – learners pass or are referred for further training based on whether they meet the assessment criteria.

 

• You will be fully supported through all aspects of the assessment process
• You must attend all teaching hours to qualify for assessment
• Mobile phones and course books must be put away during the assessment
• All submitted evidence must be your own work

It is important that no learner is denied the chance to attend a training course due to a disability.   Our trainers are all experienced teachers with a background in support for learning.   We aim to make sure all learners have fair access to assessment and are given equal opportunities to demonstrate their knowledge and practical competence, regardless of additional support needs, disabilities, temporary illness or injury or other adverse circumstances outside their control.

It may be possible to make a reasonable adjustment for a learner who has a disability, medical condition or learning need.   When determining whether  a reasonable adjustment is possible we are obligated to follow the First Aid Awards Reasonable Adjustments Policy.

This course will be delivered in English.  Learners with English as an additional language can make use of a dictionary or other means of translation to support their understanding.
